Christmas at NFUMC

This Christmas season, we pray your days are filled with the hope, peace, love, and joy that comes from knowing Christ. As we celebrate the miracle of His birth, we invite you to share in the beauty and meaning of this special time with us.

Our calendar is full of opportunities to gather, serve, and reflect together. From worship services to community events, each moment is crafted to deepen our connections with one another and with God.

Whether you're a longtime member or you’re considering visiting us for the first time, you are welcome here. We hope you’ll find a place to belong and be uplifted as we celebrate Christmas together.

ADVENT 2024

Advent Series: The Christ Express

The word Advent comes from the Latin adventus, which means "coming." Advent is a season of preparation for the coming of Christ: to receive faithfully the risen Christ who comes to us in Word and Spirit, and to await with hope Christ's coming in final victory.

Advent begins on December 1, marking the beginning of the Christian year and ends at sunset on Christmas Eve, always including four Sundays.

Both purple and blue are traditional colors for Advent and are both recognized in The United Methodist Book of Worship. Purple, as the color of royalty, it is fitting for Christ our King. Blue signifies hope and is traditionally associated with Mary, the mother of Jesus. In some traditions the color rose is associated with the third Sunday of Advent to signify joy.

White is the color of the Christmas season, which begins with Christmas Eve services. White is used through Epiphany (the Sunday after January 6), which is the day we celebrate the baptism of the Lord. Christmas Eve is not part of Advent but is the beginning of Christmas itself, since days in the Christian calendar begin at sunset the day before, as they do in the Jewish calendar.

Our greatest challenge is to make Advent a time of expectation for Christ's coming to be with us, not a frantic time of meeting secular demands of the season. Ways we can do this are by taking time to read or listen to a daily Advent devotional or having a daily moment of reflection. Whatever you choose, we hope you have a blessed Advent season.

Sunday, December 1 | 6:30 PM

We invite you to join us for a joyous service where we will hang the "greens," have our first chance to sing the great carols of Christmas by candlelight, and explain the meaning of the decorations we use during the season.

Advent is the season of preparation for the birth of Jesus and his second coming. During the four weeks leading up to Christmas, we prepare ourselves and our church community by making room in our lives for Jesus. To start the season one of our age-old traditions is the Hanging of the Greens.

Thursday, December 19 | 6:30 PM

You are invited to join us for a service of scripture, stories, special music, silent reflection, and healing prayer for those not so merry and hurting this time of year.

It is a time to recognize that Christmas can be a bittersweet time of the year. The constant refrain we hear about getting together with family reminds many people of what and who they have lost, or what they never had. The anguish of broken relationships, the insecurity of unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the loss of a loved one, the pain of isolation - all these can make us feel very much alone in the midst of the festive season. We need space and time to acknowledge our sadness and fears. We need to know that we are not alone. We need to know God’s presence during this season. We need HOPE. And that HOPE has been revealed.

So we invite you to experience a meditative worship service that takes time for remembering, sharing our hurting places with God, and preparing our hearts for the coming of Christ.

Join us to hear scripture, offer prayers for healing and wholeness, and hear songs that acknowledge that God’s presence is for those who mourn, for those who grieve, and for those who struggle. God’s Word comes to shine light in our darkness.
